Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 150 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 150 | I've got another one for you guys. I'm trying to get my old gauges wired back up and my fuel gauge pegs on full as soon as it gets power. I cannot see where it might be shorting. I ran a new sending wire and the old groung from the sending unit to the frame seams to be good. Is there somewhere else it can be going to ground?
Thanks. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | it's not 'shorting', that would be arcing and sparking .... when the gauge gets power it's default position is pegged full until the resistance from the sender gives it a ground - check your sender wire again, and the sender itself, as well as the ground to the frame with an ohmeter, unless you find a resistance between 1 [empty] and 30 some [full] ohms you have an open circuit. if the sender and wire check good you have a bad gauge

Thanks all! | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 39 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 39 | I am having a similar problem with my sending unit. My needle gets pegged when the engine is running. I have installed a new wireharness in my 1951 3100 1/2 ton. The harness came with 1 wire for the fuel sending unit, but there are 2 wires coming out of the top of the gas tank. One wire is coming from the middle of the sending unit on the tank and goes to ground under the truck. The other wire goes from the side/edge of the sending unit and goes to the fuel guage. Is this wired correctly? Any idea why I was only provided 1 wire with the new harness? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | sounds backwards, the center terminal on the sender is the sender wire, one to the "side" [mounting screws] would be an added ground in case the tank isn't providing a good ground
