My parking brake does not hold down. I've read the posts and would like to take clean the lock bar (some folks file this?) and make sure the spring is putting enough pressure on the pedal locks. How does it come apart? Do I remove the pedal lock or remove the lock bar???

The lock bar can be removed by loosening the nuts on the lock guide. I'm not sure if the nuts have to be completely removed from the guide.

The lock bar also has a rubber bumper and washer held on by a cotter pin.

Then it's attached,of course, to the pedal with a bolt that goes from a 7/16" shank down to a 3/8" in diameter threaded portion.

When you remove the rod that goes through the floor (the one with the bumper and cotter pin), you my be tempted to paint it. I suggest that you don't paint it. The paint will scrape off the first time you set the parking brake. (I painted mine this week - so I know!) It also causes the rod to hang up a little when releasing the parking brake.

Looks like it was originally blued, or some similar metal coloring agent.

Hmmm. Mine had a cadmium finish.
