So I keep gathering parts for my 283. I have a stock 2bbl intake manifold and I'm in need of a new ( rebuilt ) carb. I want something that has an auto choke either divorced or hot air. My question is: 2bbl's have been made by different manufactures for many years. What auto choke 2bbl is best/compatible for my 283? Do different year carbs fit different year manifolds or are they all compatible fit wise? I did a search and did not come up with much. Thanks for your time

Why not use the original-equipment Rochester 2-BBL? Untold millions of them were used on 283's from 1957 to the early to mid-1960's on car and truck engines. There's bound to be a bunch of them left, either as rebuildable cores or already-built replacement carbs.

what Jerry said - you should be able to easily find a Rotchester, even from NAPA, works fine on my 283

How about a Rochestor 2gc, I was looking at those. So I can buy any 2GC from '57 to Mid '60 and it will bolt right up to my Intake Manifold?

Also, does it have to be specifically for a 283, or can I buy one from a 302/327

There are at least two versions of the "2GC". Your 283 is going to need the small-bore model. The bigger-bore carbs were used on engines like the 389 Pontiac, and a couple of other, bigger engines. That one will run far too lean on a 283 due to bigger venturis than needed. When that big-bore carb was used on the mid-1970's 305's, it was necessary to set the float level extremely high to compensate for low venturi velocity. 30 cubic inches less engine would make the big one almost impossible to tune or drive. The 305 manifold also doesn't work on a 283 because the 2-BBL bolt pattern and manifold bore size is wrong for the small-bore 265/283 carb.
