I'm just getting ready to do a tune up on the ignition system and noticed a lot of wear on a few of the distributer cap contacts. So naturally I check the shaft and it is pretty loose in there.

Not normal to wear on contacts in dist cap. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 | check the pin that attaches the drive gear ...video... as you see mine was loose and played havoc trying to time. I found a replacement distributor on the shelf at my local NAPA. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,746 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,746 | Any side play in the upper bushing will allow the point gap to change, which alters the dwell and the timing. There should not be any noticeable side play at the area of the cam that operates the points. Roll the engine around until the points are fully open, then move the shaft around and watch the point gap change. Then go get yourself another distributor! Jerry
