The speedometer on my 56 half-ton/ 3-spd is intermittent. the plastic gear in the transmission tail housing is very worn. the truck has a 3.90 axle. what is the proper color/tooth count for the gear i need? the one i took out has 22 teeth, but i see there are many different ones available. thx!

I'd just match what was there, most likely it's original? .... also you might want to check if the speedo head doesn't need cleaning and the cable is good, those trans gears get worn for a reason

thx - the speedo has been rebuilt and the cable is new, this plastic gear is the last link in the system. yeah - i can just match up what was there in the absence of a more definitive answer. the reason i am asking is a got a free 56 engine & trans from a bolter a while back and the gear in that one has 19 teeth ???

Most of the 55-57 truck 3 speed transmissions I have worked on used a metal driven gear. I think they have 19 teeth. OD's and pass cars used a plastic gear. The metal gear is considerably smaller than the plastic gears. You may be tearing up the plastic gear because it is the wrong application. I have a metal gear I could donate to the cause if it will help.
