I have a 40 truck and am trying to remove the paint from the doors and roof.
I have tried a 7" sanding disc on my buffer and 40 grit on my da.
the top coat of paint(bake on original lol) comes off quite easaly with the da.
Its the primer underneath thats a bear to get fully off.
Do i need to take it fully off?
can i cover it with epoxy primer and would it be fine?
How did you take the old primer off your vehicles?

you want that old primer off if possible, old tech and new tech paint mixing is asking for problems down the road.

For stripping, we used to use a sidewheel grinder and an 80 grit sanding disc shaped into a hexagon with a pair of tin snips. Use a very light touch, and just "wipe" the paint away down to bare metal with the tool running at full speed. As the cutting edge of the sandpaper dulls, trim about 1/4" off each edge to expose a fresh cutting edge. Don't bear down, or you'll thin the metal too much.

so the edges don't build up with paint?
Gives the disc more cutting area?

The corners dig in and dislodge the paint, primer, and surface rust better than a rounded edge, with less down pressure exerted on the metal. I can skin the paint down to bare metal and barely leave any scratches in the surface with a high speed hex disc and a little careful sweeping motion.
The same procedure works for rough-shaping body filler before going to a D-A sander and 80-grit paper.

Of course, that was one of the tricks we used to get a job done profitably back when putting the groceries on the table depended on getting paying work out the door. Good quality work is great, but good quality fast work is better!
I did practically all my prep work with an air powered angle grinder with an infinitely-variable trigger speed control valve.

But! we have a box of 3M bristle disc's!
Brought one home and tried it on my grinder and worked great.
Just need to go slow and not heat up the panels too much.
Will give this a try on the weekend. | | |
