OK, so getting ready for paint, etc.. I'm not sure if I want to keep my above fender front signal lights or not. IF I loose them, can I use a different socket and bulb in my front parking lights? In a way, I like them as they are very visible front front and rear, but....

Thoughts?

Dual-filament (double contact) bulb sockets are available for many years.

Go with the parking light option. Those fender mounted lights don't look right unless they are the truly old fashioned directional arrows with the eyebrow. Sorry, personal opinion I just don't think they do anything for a great design.

I kept them on mine becauce i like them big and bright. I needed new parklights so I ordered new lower lights that double as park and turn signals. I had gust one of the Guide fender sigs which was not repairable, but was able to get a pair of Guides from Taillight King.

I'm thinking boing with double contact bulb sockets. I can always add them back on if I don't like the look, but hard to take off and fill the hole if I don't do it now.

I changed the sockets on my '49 to use 1157NA bulbs, and it was fairly easy and worked great. Got them at NAPA. And, yes, weld up those holes now...as you say, you can add fender signals later.

My 2 cents if I was planning on keeping it somewhat original look I would keep them but if I was going for more of a hotrod look in my planning I would lose them. Its a little different look than most I have seen and I like different vs what ever everyone else is doing.
