My '53 1/2 Ton's 6v fuel gauge appears to be working properly- but a few days ago I noticed that even after I remove the key it just stays on. It just reads whatever the gas level is. I disconnect the battery if I leave it overnight.

Any ideas on what could've happened?

Or is this normal and I've just been blind for the three years Ive been driving it??

What is the input line to the gauge connected to?

Fuel tank sender I think. It's been there (a new wire) for three years.

Again, it appears that the gauge is working-

It just won't shut off with the ignition.

The input line is the power-in line.

1. Where is the power coming from?

2. Which post is power-in connected to on the back of the gauge (the post behind Empty of Full).

Gauge power is in to the post with the reg tag.

PROGRESS! I completely disconnected the ignition switch and the gauge problem disappeared.
I suspect one of the wires was miswired at the ign sw- I had to re-connect it during a dark rainstorm a few weeks back.
Or the switch is bad.
Anyway, I have another switch and will connect that one up.
I think I have it figured out - as long as I can get the leads connected to the correct ign sw posts! smile

Thanks!

It sounds like it's just on constant power, not switched. Sounds like you reconnected it to the wrong post on the switch.

So is it supposed to read empty when the truck is off? Mine (6v repop gauge/new main harness) drops a little when the truck is off and returns to the proper reading when back on but it never drops all the way to empty. I also disconnect the battery when I leave it over night or longer and I've never noticed it behaving differently.

No, fuel gauges never read empty when off (unless it's on a newer vehicle with electric stepper motors in the gauges), they typically just go to the same point in the gauge, but each one is different.
