For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 33 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 33 | My '53 1/2 Ton's 6v fuel gauge appears to be working properly- but a few days ago I noticed that even after I remove the key it just stays on. It just reads whatever the gas level is. I disconnect the battery if I leave it overnight.
Any ideas on what could've happened?
Or is this normal and I've just been blind for the three years Ive been driving it??

Again, it appears that the gauge is working-
It just won't shut off with the ignition.

1. Where is the power coming from?
2. Which post is power-in connected to on the back of the gauge (the post behind Empty of Full).

I completely disconnected the ignition switch and the gauge problem disappeared. I suspect one of the wires was miswired at the ign sw- I had to re-connect it during a dark rainstorm a few weeks back. Or the switch is bad. Anyway, I have another switch and will connect that one up. I think I have it figured out - as long as I can get the leads connected to the correct ign sw posts! Thanks!

Sounds like you reconnected it to the wrong post on the switch. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 940 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 940 | So is it supposed to read empty when the truck is off? Mine (6v repop gauge/new main harness) drops a little when the truck is off and returns to the proper reading when back on but it never drops all the way to empty. I also disconnect the battery when I leave it over night or longer and I've never noticed it behaving differently. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,596 | No, fuel gauges never read empty when off (unless it's on a newer vehicle with electric stepper motors in the gauges), they typically just go to the same point in the gauge, but each one is different. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 940 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 940 | Cool. Thanks for clarifying 44gmcpu! | | |
