I believe the final result was "this person" didn't finalize the "discussion", nobody ever reported they had obtained any product from him ... see this thread for some battleship lino sources

As I recall, that poster got belligerent when asked for a progress report. (read Red's links - you'll get the picture). He is missing in inaction, but it would be nice to hear back from him.

"battleship" lino is the original product invented in the late 1800's - it's made from 'natural' materials and is still used in non-allergenic home construction and in hospitals - since vinyl "linoleum" flooring became the most popular [because cheap], real battleship lino is less commonly found, and almost all of it is made in Scotland by one company, which is the main reason it's pricey .... check your biggest local flooring supply store, they should be able to get it for you, although it won't be cheaper .... it's also used by artists, for "lino cuts", so folks in 'artsy' areas may be able to find some from art material suppliers

Battleship linoleum in described in the Wikipedia as a thicker grade of linoleum that got its name from being used in USA battleships. I do not think it was the original name of linoleum.

A thicker grade of linoleum is needed in 47-55 Suburban rear floors (and grooves about 3/4" apart have to cut/routed into them). The thicker black-color linoleum used in 54/55 is supposedly not available in North America. The thicker grade of brown linoleum used in 47-53 rear Suburban floors used to be (and may still be) available from the company named Battleship Linoleum (and maybe from other companies).

If anyone knows of a local store that sells solid black linoleum, please post the name and phone number. I'd like to call them to see how thick it is. By the way, I bought the last 9' remnant piece in Norh America of the thinner thickness black Marmoleum in around 2002. I have checked about every two years to see if the thinner or thicker pure back linoleum has reached our shores.

Tim - have you been checking this place?
also Restoration Supply in Calif still lists 1/8" thick black [and brown by special order] at $9 sq ft

Bill,

It looks like you hit it on the head.

Forbo is one of the suppliers that I have called in the past. While they are based in Scotland, their Maroleum/Linoleum is made in Germany. They never had the correct thickness. They had 2.5mm : ~1/10"

Restoration Supply has 78" wide sheet of 1/8" linoleum (3.2mm, from Germany - I do not know if it is the Forbo product). That thickness is satisfactory for routing. I am going to see if they will mail me a sample. This product costs $9/sq-ft, as you posted.

Battleship Linoleum has the 2.5mm black or brown linoleum at $6.50/sq-ft
The owner seemed a little skeptical about a 3.5mm product being available.

Isn't that thin and kinda flimsy ? I have a rubber mat made for a pickup bed that's about 3/8" thick that I'm going to try.

I've never found any other major manufacturer of real lino than Forbo [although they only claim to have 65% of the market], a Swiss conglomerate, that bought out the "descendant" of the originator of plant based lino - [Wiki: "The largest present day manufacturer of linoleum is Kirkcaldy-based Forbo Nairn, which sells the material under the trademarked name of Marmoleum. The company, which is part of the Switzerland-based Forbo Group, is the oldest manufacturer of linoleum in the world."], and they have plants all over the world, the German Forbo Siegling Group makes conveyor belting .... my local flooring store can get Forbo's products readily, I'd suspect there's a plant in N America

when I first built my mill 30 years ago I used battleship lino locally sourced, it lasted pretty well but didn't like very heavy objects dropped on it grin when I checked the price to replace it after about 15-20 years I decided to switch to fiberglas

you might want to investigate those links Tim, there's only two I found that actually have lino, Forbo and Armstrong, the rest deal vinyl ... and Armstrongs' appear to all be mottled colors, 2.5 mil, and they seem to sell more tiles than roll goods .... comes down to Farbo being the originating supplier of the battleship grade thickness ohwell

I also found a number of art lino suppliers with "battleship" lino, all gray, and a marine forum where it was claimed battleship lino was so named from the battleship gray color, not from being used on ships, which may explain all the art battleship lino being gray

You are right about mottled colors being more common.

I am not interested in confirming who has what. Mannington does not make linoleum, but Armstrong states that they do. A quick look at Tarkett & Infinity shows they make linoleum.

http://www.armstrong.com/flooring/products/linoleum

http://www.tarkett-commercial.com/floors/site/en-us/ann/637/announce.asp

http://www.infinitycork.com/

I have the information that I need. If I can get a sample, I'll measure the thickness and report back here.
