The wheel is still securely attached as is the column and things still seem to be good at the steering box. I can however move the wheel side to side and up and down within the column so I'm guessing the mast bearing has come apart? Sound right?

Bill Agreed. You should also check the spring the goes under the steering wheel, it may be broken or missing. Without the spring, there's no preload on the bearing, which will allow the steering shaft to move in the housing.

It all started with a clunk while maneuvering into a spot at the local big box hardware store. I wonder if that spring didn't just break or pop loose?
[edit] Hmm. I'm not finding any mention of a spring in the manual or on any of the usual vendors websites. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | the 'clunk' was the balls breaking out of a dry bearing
