I saw another 49 chevy like mine and it had a 3 speed in the floor. Did 49 come with a column shift or floor shift 3 speed? If so does anyone have a 3 speed floor trany? another question does the drive shaft have to be changed from a column shift to a floor shift both being 3 speeds.

Thanks

The '49 3 speed would be column shift, the floor shifter would be some form of aftermarket setup.

Are you sure its a 3 speed? Also an earlier 3 on the floor will fit if you use the old clutch housing. The 3 on the column and 3 on the floor use a different bolt pattern. If it goes into a tower on top of the transmission, its factory. If it has linkage on the side, its aftermarket. Are you sure its a 49. 47 was the transition year.

look just on top of the steering column if there is no space above it for a column shifter to fit it could be an earlier model than the title says when the three speed was only on the floor. you can also look under the hood on the top of the firewall there will be no drainage/water runs out to the sides as on later models. mine's an early '48 (one of the first I think) and I'll never be able to fit a column shift in.

Learned something, thought only 47's had the 3sp floor shift. Guess they used up the leftovers in early 48's. I try to find 47/48/ and Burbs for the frame mount gas tank and brackets and have never run across a 48 with the floor shift 3sp.

Here's what the '48-'51 linkage should look like. Compare that to the floor shift 3 speed found on the '47. Note that the cases are different. There was no floor shift option for the 3 speed '48-'59, the only floor shift option would be the 4 speed.

1949?

What was the RPO for a 48-54 3-speed factory floor shift?
