I have a 350
Chevy motor, it did have a turbo 350 automatic bolted behind it. I changed to to a 700-R4, I tried to bolt the old starter in, one with offset bolt pattern, well that will not bolt right as it jams against trans. So I tried a cross bolt pattern starter and can not get it to bolt up either. Am I missing something simple ?

do you have the correct "nose" length? i did the same thing and had to get the correct nose length. i was told there are three different ones for the autos. offset pattern is the one to use on the 350.

It shouldnt matter which transmission you have, your original starter should bolt right up.
It bolts to the block, not the tranny.

I am familiar where it bolts just the nose length is wrong.I have the starter that was used on the turbo 350. When bolted on the end of the pinon gear shaft is aligned with flex plate teeth instead of being in the center of the shaft as it was on the turbo 350; I guess I will have to take to starter shop and get a different nose piece

different years/trans/starters use different flex plates, and there are at least 4 different starters for 350's with automatics - what year engine and what year trans? are you sure the flex plate you have is appropriate for the 700R4 and starter? 168 or 153 tooth .... starter for an 03 s-10 v6 may work, I think they use the 153 tooth flex plate

Or you could get a starter for an 85/86 chevy pickup C or K model with 350 with automatic transmission.
They all came with a 700R4 or turbo 400.
With that application, all you need to know is automatic or manual transmission.

The engine is a 76 - 350 and the trans is a 89 700-r4 and flywheel is 168 tooth.

Beware, on the 86 engines the fly wheels were different. Early 85 should be okay, but in 86 they went to a one piece rear main seal and the fly wheel is balanced.

I do believe the bolt pattern for 1 piece cranks is different and will not bolt up to a early crank.

I was wondering about the weighted flywheel also.
But if the teeth count is the same , the starter should fit.

I have an 86 K/10 with a 454 in it , also with a 700R4. As far as I know GM didnt offer a 454 with a 700R4, only a TH400, my starters always fit.
