Does this conversion involve new brackets? Is so are there any recomentadtions for type?

I am also considering adding an electronic ignition system down the road.

Personally, I wouldn't make the change unless the generator or regulator were bad, or I had the engine our, or I had money burning a hole in my pocket. With the right alternator, you can use your existing brackets. Best thing to do is to take your generator to your local parts store. They should be able to find one that will only require a bushing on the aft end of the lower bolt.

Wiring changes are minimal. GM alternators have internal regulators so that's one less part to clutter the dash and go bad. Get a DA plug fom Patrick's or 5th Ave auto parts (See the Links on this site). I had constant problems with dead batteries when using generators, never since changing to an alternator. Any problems and you can pick up a rebuilt unit anywhere. Be sure to use the smaller pulley as an alternator needs to spin faster to keep up a charge at idle.

Electric wipers, halogen lights, 40 watt stereo and never had a dead battery. I don't do much city driving though and if I spent most of my time sitting in traffic I might consider an alternator. I like the generator for the same reason I run dual rochesters instead of a 4 barrel, I like the nostalgic look.
