For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 74 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 74 | I have a 48 chev panel one ton with a 235 and a 4:56 rear end and I from all my reading it looks like I can only swap out to a 4:11 which will not give me what I need for the highway. It looks like I should go to a different transmission. It looks like I should go with a OD trans. Are there any OD trans that will bolt up to what I have. Someone said that A833 and NV4500 are good alternatives but not sure what trans these are. I am new at this but learning with the help of this site. The numbers for my rear end 3rd member is 3699535 and the trans 591665 if this helps. The A833 is likely an easier and cheaper swap. The tricky part about this swap is that the part of the transmission that goes into the bellhousing, the front bearing retainer, is 5.125 inches, and the hole in the bellhousing is 4.686 inches. The front bearing retainer can be removed from the transmission and turned down on a lathe to fit the bellhousing. Cap head allen bolts will need to be used to reinstall the bearing retainer once it has been turned down. A new driveshaft will need to be made.
For an NV4500 swap, it is a little more complicated. NV4500 transmissions came in several different configurations... 2wd, 4wd, dodge, chevy... The 1994-1997 Dodge 2wd transmission in my preference for the swap. Other versions of the NV4500 could likely be adapted but they bring about their own hurdles. The 1994-1997 Dodge 2wd NV4500 can be made to work with a mechaniacal speedometer. The input shaft of the dodge transmission is 1 inch longer than the input shaft of the gm transmissions. This allows you to bolt the transmission up to the bellhousing by using a 1 inch adapter plate. Advance Adapters sells an adapter plate that will let you do that, almost. Again the Adapter plate is set up to go in a bellhousing with a 5.125 hole, and the 48 bellhousing has a smaller 4.686 hole. Either the bellhousing will need to be bored out to fit the adapter plate, or the adapter plate will need to be turned down to fit the bellhousing.
If you do a search of my screen name and NV4500, you will likely find dozens of posts which go into further detail of the NV4500 swap. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | If you are not going to use the vehicle for hauling heavy loads, a 3 speed with a Borg Warner OD will work well with your 4.56 gears. 1955 through about 1966 Chev OD transmissions will bolt to your clutch housing. I think it was 67 when there was a Saginaw OD that is really beefy, but they are scarce. I have been running BW OD behind Y-blocks for 50 years and they work just as well behind a GMC 270 or 302. A 235 doesn't really have the power to to very fast. Especially if you lug it down too much. | | |
