I was driving my truck home from work the other day and blew out a transmission seal. I was thinking this might be a good opportunity to upgrade transmissions since I have to pull this one out. It currently has a three speed automatic. I want to install a 5 or 6 speed automatic. The truck has the original 350.

Is this possible?

What transmission could I use?

Could I get a rebuilt one out of a newer truck?

This is a very popular modification. The 88 up to about 92 700R4 is a 4 speed o-drive trans. that works great in these trucks. It is fairly easy. You need to get the correct cable hook up & have the drive shaft shortened. You can get one from a salvage or specialty trans. co. If you are near K.C. there is a rebuilder here in town that sells them over the counter at a reasonable price. If you are interested e-mail me. [email protected]

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

I have a transmission i am pulling out of a 1989 chevy 1500. I will have to remove the transfer case and install a new tail housing/shaft since my 70' is a 2wd. Will this work? My 70 is a 3/4ton.

You will probably need to have your driveshaft reworked. You will also need to get a way to deal with the lock up torque converter also.

So I will need a lockup kit? I have heard that I will need to shorten the drive shaft.
