They worked for a lot of years before we had alternators in general use. One advantage, if you've got a standard transmssion, is the generator can develop enough output on a push start to get you going even with a totally dead battery. The alternator system can't do that. It has to have at least a little battery voltage left to excite the field coils. Unless you're planning to support more electrical accessiries than the truck had originally, a good-working generator shouild be all you need. Jerry

Also have you been to the carshow in parksville around the time of the sandcaslte show? I believe it was a sunday either in late july or early august? Just wondering

You will need a long exhaust pipe out to the back though .
I've gone through CHP checkpoints this way too , never a problem .

You have to have a spark arrestor somewhere in the system. A muffler serves that purpose, and so does a cat, and so does a mesh screen. You don't have to have a muffler as long as you can prove your engine isn't loud enough to need one.
