They weigh about 500 or 600 lbs more than a 6V-53. Or about 4 times as heavy as an original engine in one.

Now I see they were actually in GMC trucks. What kind of gearing was used? Were they as slow as I'm expecting? I have 87 GMC Brigadier with a 6v71 and it has a 12000lb front axle(need to sell it). The 6v71 is one solid chunk.
Stretch your frame and sheet metal or maybe move the cab back a couple of feet. Might be easier to add 600 to that 350 and restore a 950. I went to a truck show last month that had some beautiful GMC950's with 6v71 engines. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | The 371 was offered in the 450 series in 1952 and 53. And possibly some other years. They never really caught on because they were expensive, heavy and had less power than a 302 gas. And most operators of medium trucks did not have facilities to maintain the Diesels. I remember a couple of them being around when I was young and the owners were very disappointed in them. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,795 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,795 | The 71-series engines are huge, whether they're inline or V-type. What the name stands for is "71 cubic inches per cylinder", so a 6V-71 is a 426 cubic inch engine that fires on every upstroke of the piston because it's a 2-cycle. It would have the same number of power impulses per mile as an 852 cubic inch 4-stroke. That's why the older Detroit engines sound like they're running so fast- - - - -they're making as much noise as a 4-stroke running twice the RPM.
A 53-series engine has 53 cubic inches per cylinder, so it's smaller and lighter. They're much more suitable for medium-duty truck use, but they're still big, heavy, and noisy. The term "screamin' Jimmy" is well-deserved, especially when the howl of the blower gets factored into the equation. Jerry

There were some 3-53's put in GM trucks as conversions from Detroit, they made a housing set for the 3 and 4 cyl that was a bolt in swap for gas engines. I've also seen some step vans that look to have come with the 3-53 stock.
