The last time I had a chevy do that was with a friends 61 impala with a 348 in it. we suspected trouble with the pump pickup so removed the pan to find the strainer and pickup tube had fallen out of the pump and on a turn the oil would rush away from the hole in the pump. Fix it soon or you will regret it. Probably adding a couple quarts to much oil will buy you some time before disaster. No it won't hurt to have too much oil in it compared to starving the pump and bearings.
thanks guys

If you can find a spare transmission yoke to insert in the transmission you won't even have to lose any fluid. As far as irregular shifting is concerned, remember, correct adjustment of throttle/transmission linkage is necessary to proper shift points too.

My thinking of removal of engine from these cars was using a overhead hoist which had adequate lift to come high and angle down considerable to clear the radiator yoke. We just used a chain long enough to go around the assembly as a sling in the proper place for the angle we wanted. I find boltiing with short chains to something up high sometimes limits the ability to work that angle need without a balancer.

If that means pulling the engine, so be it. It's possible a bearing change now might avoid a crankshaft replacement later. If the crank is worn out of round or tapered, it needs to be reground and proper-sized bearings installed. Let it continue to knock, and you'll end up with a boat anchor instead of an engine. Jerry
