For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 3 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 3 | I recently bought a GMC COE that is listed on the title as a 49 and after getting it home I was told by another that it was a 39 based on the model # and serial #. Model # AF 602 SN 515. HP 92.5 @ 2600 RPM Max wt 23000 lbs. I only bought the cab which was heavily modified so i don't have any other numbers to fall back on. I just joined the forum and tried to find other forum posts that discused this. Does any one have a suggestion? Thank you for your help.

The only difference is the '46-'49 models have a alligator type hood that splits the grille in half. The earlier version has a one piece grille with two access panels. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Spanky,
For the sake of those in the 1.5-2 ton Chevrolet big-bolt world, what size trucks are you referring to as the Heavy Duty Line of GMC?

The "400" series trucks were considerd Heavy Medium Duty, & "300" series Medium Duty. Truck in question here is a 600 series COE. Chevrolet didn't have a Heavy Duty Line until the 1956 model "7000", & "9000" series Low Cab Forwards(LCF's), & 8000, & 10000 series conventionals came out. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | You are assuming too much, Spanky,
Tell us the "tonnage ratings" for those series.
For example, my 350 series COE is heavy Medium Duty or Medium Duty and is a 2-ton truck?
Thanks,

I am happy to have the confusion cleared. My next problem is how to convince California DMV that it is not a commercial truck and the 1-ton P-30 chassis it is sitting on is "Really" what should count in figuring the capacity and therefore the registration and tax. Are there any California truckers that have experience licensing vintage HD trucks? I will be using this for more than just parades. I will be using it as a (sorry to say) car hauler for a vintage sports race car.
