1956 235 timing at tdc is 0, starts and runs at about 1000 to 1200 rpm idle with 1/4 choke. Push choke all the way in or no choke and it shuts off. No backfire, miss or other distrib. problems, plugs are new and gapped correct as are the points. Has a carter yf that had a kit put in about 6 months ago. When shut off, carb smokes as if it still is getting a little fuel.
I'm thinking it needs a new float in the carb and that the float is not sealing off. Maybe back timing off 4 degrees tops. The engine has a little bit of a hotter than stock cam, but that idle is still way to high. Stock idle was around 475 I believe?? Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

If it needs choke its not because of float needle not shuting off. How does it go under power?

See if there is any gas running into the carb. If so you have a float or needle & seat problem. Its also posible the diaphram is ruptured or not installed correctly. They are prety flimsy. Make sure it comes off fast idle when the choke is off. Have you tried slowing it down with the idle speed screw? It could be the idle mixture screw is too lean. You usually want a little more spark adfvance from the zero mark.

I agree that the carb is probably my big issue. Thanks for the tips, i'll check them and be sure. Do you think the old throttle plate could be causing a vacuum leak? Just an idea i had.

My 235 will still run as low as 300rpm without shutting off.(before setting idle) ...click... Try a new kit in your carter, re time, adjust mixture screw Good Luck | | |
