For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 130 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 130 | I bought a 12V gage new and I can't get it to work. I installed it the way instructed. I get a voltage reading through it to the sending unit, but I can't get the needle to move. I know the sending unit is good as I tested it on a diffrant gage. All my grounds are good. Is there a test I can do on the gage, voltage or ohms? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,636 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,636 | If you take the wire loose at the sending unit does the gauge go to full? Or if you take the sending unit wire loose from the back of the gauge does the gauge go to full?
If it goes to full when you disconnect the wire at the sender then the sender is grounded. If it goes to or past full when you disconnect the sender wire at the gauge then the sender wire may be grounded some where along the way to the tank.
Could it be the power wire to the gauge is on the wrong terminal? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 | A majority of the new fuel gauge problems are due to a bad ground.
Is the gauge grounded when you test it?
There a a small plate on the back of the new gauge. It needs to touch metal in the gauge housing.(not paint)
One other thing to look at is the needle. The new gauges has the needle sitting higher and it could be pinched by the bezel.
That's just two things to look at. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 130 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 130 | Thanks for the replies. All the wiring is new, everything has a ground wire to it, I don't rely on chass ground. My needle does not move at all, it's sits at 3/4 full power or not. I'll pull the gage this weekend and check for the other problems. My other gage jumped when voltage was put to it, this one didn't. I'll post what I find. Take a look at that needle, might be pinched ...ground... | | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 130 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 130 | Thanks Dads, It was pinched, That was an easy fix. I'm using the tank from an old chevell so some small ajustments to the gage needle and send unit were done and now I think it will work fine now. For the last 30 years I just did it by milage. It will be neet to have a gage now. By helping each other, it makes it more fun to fix these old trucks. I wish this sight was around when I first got the truck. | | |
