Just got the truck and i'm trying to sort out a lot of previous owner electrical messes. He put in a ballast resister and from what i think i'm reading in the threads, i don't need, nor want this for a 6V system. Is that correct? It's very very hard to start this beast and between the reverse polarity (he had it hooked up negative ground) , backwards wired coil, no connection to generator i can't believe i got it going at all. should i remove the ballast resister that he put in? | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 | No need for a ballast resister on a 6V system. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,865 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,865 | Yes! Remove the resistor, and get the charging system working! When the starter is running, you're probably down to 4.5-5 volts at the coil primary, even without a resistor. No wonder it's hard to start!
