I have an oil bath air filter and today I had cleaned it up. I dumped the old oil, scrubbed it in a solvent tank, sanded the outside, and getting it prep for paining.
The inside element seems pretty old; who knows how long the air cleaner assembly has been there.
Has any one seen or know of where I can find a replacement assembly? Or, is there a way to clean the one I have?

Thanks for any help,

I've soaked the fiber element in Kerosene or some other type of solvent and air-dried it at times. If it doesn't come apart and disentigrate, you're in good shape.

Jerry,
Thanks for the advice. The fiber element is still pretty good shape so I'll soak it this weekend.

Once you clean it, don't use air pressure to try to dry it- - - -just turn it upside down out in the sunlight and let it drip dry.

Gents,
As advised, I am soaking my oil air filter element in kerosene for the weekend. Here is an old pic (before the journey began) of the ail filter oil holder thing. Also, here are some pics of it now. pic 1 pic 2 pic 3 pic 4 pic 5 pic 6 pic 7 pic 8

Should I wait to add the 50 wt oil or should go a head and add it now. From the looks of it, it will be a while till it actually will be put on a running engine.

Thank you all for the advise because you all motivate me to continue to tinker with this toy of mine.

Hey Air filter guys - I have a 1950 3800 with the oil-bath air filter and I don't see any way to get at the filter element. The top of the filter holder is crimped and It doesn't appear that the bottom can be pulled off either. Is there something that I'm missing?

Here's a couple of pics: http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/carmental2/IMG_0957.jpg

You do not remove the filter "element" in an oil bath air cleaner. You clean the element in kerosene and clean any gook out of the base, drain/dry the kerosene from the element, attach the base to the carburetor, add 50 weight oil to the fill line in the base, put the filter element/top on, and you are then good to go.

WishekBruce:

Your air cleaner is like the one in my '54 3100. It is RPO #216D.

If you want to put a decal on it when you're finished cleaning and painting it, I found a decal at The Filling Station that is the close to pictures in Chevrolet brochures of the period.
< CLICK > 1954 Brochure - second row, far right

I believe that the decal was used on RPO #216D air cleaners throughout AD production. I don't know abour pre-1946.

Here is info and more photos of the decal ...

Hey Lonnie,

In your travels - ever see a filter with a sticker this shape?

PIC

There's nothing to see on the sticker, its completely washed out. It could be aftermarket - or another Canadian engine difference...

Mark -

I'm afraid my travels are pretty limited!

I don't recognize the air cleaner or the decal. I don't even know what kind of carb you have. About the only thing I recognize is the red top on the Carter "Red Top" fuel filter.

Maybe another Canadian truck owner can tell you if it is an original GM air cleaner.

I've always enjoyed seeing the differences between US and Canadian made vehicles.

Its a Carter W1 I believe. I'm no longer using that carb as it didn't fit on my 235 intake.

No problem - I'll likely end up using the same decal you did.

As for that Carter fuel filter - I have been unable to find an element for it!

CARTER FUEL FILTER ELEMENT
Search Ebay for "carter fuel filter". There are a few stone elements for Carter fuel filters listed. Don't know if they will fit your filter housing. I've always liked Carter Red Tops.

AIR CLEANER DECAL
Since the air cleaner may not be original GM, the single color decal at Jim Carter in my earlier post may look good on it also.

Big Tonka,
You've got a "Donaldson" air cleaner. As far as I know, Donaldson made the oilbath aircleaners for the Canadian Trucks.

Here's mine:

There was a fellow on the OLDGMC trucks website that was reproducing the decals a while ago.

Mr. Lang,

Thanks for that! I will try to source it!

Found one that looks the same, less the Made in Canada print... I find the Canadian stuff is almost impossible to find...

I am interested in this thread as I am looking for the filter material for an oil bath air cleaner I picked up .It is the heavy duty oil bath cleaner same as pictured in the lead post. It is in great shape except that somebody has carefully picked out all the fiberous material from the filter body. What is this stuff, and where can I get more of it?

I'd like to replace the '53 chevy automobile oil bath cleaner that I am presently using with the truck model.

You guys are good. Glad you identified the Canadian air cleaner and found the correct decal.

I searched Stovebolt for info on replacing the filter material in an oil bath air cleaner. I searched ...
+"oil bath" +material

This might be a really stupid question, but here goes ...
I have an oil bath cleaner that appears to be exactly the same as the ones shown in this thread. However, the top and the element basket seem to be made in one piece, and I have not found a way to separate them. I suppose I can immerse the whole top part in solvent, but I would much prefer to see three pieces instead of two. Were they ever made as a unit? If not, is there a trick if they are "stuck" together? Thanks.

Harry, no tricks, the filter section doesn't come apart on the HD air cleaners, see fig 30 in Tims link here

Hey Bill - that's exactly what I want to do. The figure shows the 3 pieces - top, element cage, and base. In my case the top and element cage seem to be fused.

Harry - that's how mine is as well. The top is part of the filter element. You don't CHANGE it, you clean it.

Will try to find a photo.

That is also my experience and additionally they have about 3/4" space between them when mounted on a Fenton intake. I'm guilty of just putting the U.S. repop stickers on mine.
