For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 18 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 18 | Fellow bolters - is there a difference between a similar year truck 10 bolt verses a car 10 bolt rear differential? I need one for my 57-3100 half ton. A salvage yard is trying to sell me one out of a sedan telling me I only need to move the spring perches. What say you?
Also if there is a difference is there a quick way to tell which is which? Thank you in advance. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | cars are 5 stud for starters, with entirely different guts and likely different track widths ....

I'm finally to the point of starting work on the dif but when I opened it up found the inside looked like a hand gernade went off in there. Now I know why it was locked up. I believe it's best to look for a replacement suitable for rebuild instead. Most of the yards within a few hours drive don't have anything so I guess I need to keep looking. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | There's also several different 10 bolts used in both Passenger and Truck, with differing ring gear and housing sizes. They range from the 7.5/7.6 found in S10s and '78 and late mid size to the 8.6 found in late model GM trucks. Parts do not interchange exept within the ring gear size families. An option you might consider would be to find a new 3rd member for your existing housing. That will keep a reaend you know will fit right. The 3rd members will swap '55-'62.
