I'll be installing a new engine in my truck pretty soon and while I'm at it, I'll either replace or reface the clutch components. I once had an experience with a pilot bushing where after pressing it into the crankshaft, its inside diameter decreased and I couldn't get the transmission in. I managed to address it with sandpaper on some round stock but it was not very accurate. I didn't have any problems with it but I've always wondered what the best way is of dealing with something like this.

Sometimes it's not an undersize pilot bushing- - -it just gets distorted as it's driven into the end of the crankshaft. I like to hang the bushing on a piece of wire into a container of dry ice and alcohol so it shrinks enough to be a slip fit or just needs a light tap to get it into the crank. Once it warms up, the hole in the middle expands back to the right size and it's tight in the crankshaft. Be sure and use gloves- - - -the dry ice is something like 70 degrees below zero! Instant frostbite!

BTW, the same procedure works for valve guides- - - -freeze the guide and the driver together, then tap it into place in the cylinder head. It works even better if you warm the head up with a torch a little before driving the guide into place.

Well it depends on how you install it to a degree. If you have hammered it in, the bonze is soft and peens easily. Pressing it in is best. The best way to resize it if its deformed is to ream it.

Last year I replaced mine. The truck was in the cold garage and the bushing came warm from the house. I had to really hammer it to get it in and I was quite worried. Fortunately it didn't distort but I learned not to do that again!

Thanks for the responses. I will try the dry ice when it comes time to install the bushing. In the other instance I mentioned, I did drive the bushing in and it did distort somewhat. It was a thin-walled bushing compared to the ones I've seen on Stovebolts.

This stuff available at industrial and electronics suppliers works quick and efficiently for sleeve or bushing installation.

It's just Freon 134, available at any FLAPS. Probably cheaper that way, too. Just hold the can upside down when you open the charging tap to get liquid instead of gas. A CO2 fire extinguisher works better, if you have one handy.

My '38 has a pilot bearing instead of a bushing. Would the bearing fit this application? Why did Chevy get away from using a bearing in favor of a bushing?

Tiny, I think because of reliability issues.
Small rolling element bearings are more fragile and harder to provide proper cleanliness and lubrication over the life of the clutch componants.
cost should be lower for a plain bearing.
A plain bearing will live with more abuse
A plain bearing will carry more load for it's size than a
rolling element bearing.
Since the pilot bearing rotates entirely (no movement between the bearing componants)with the flywheel/input shaft most of the time, a reduction in friction would only benefit when the clutch is disengaged.
A plain pilot bearing is nearly always reusable at clutch replacement time wheareas a rolling element bearing is nearly always unusable/destroyed.
The bushing type bearing is normally made of porous(sintered-not made from solid)material so as to be self lubricating.
Don't underestimate the seemingly low tech plain bearing.

thanks for posting the "cool can" 134. i didn't know they had that either. i always thought a roller bearing was better than a bushing? my hudson 308 had a roller bearing i replace with my rebuild a while back. the old one was in good shape but the new one came with the kit. i havn't had any trouble installing either but the rolling bearing took a little more care. the auto parts store told me the bushing is the same for the 30's up till 90's or something like that- i was pretty impressed with that.
