I have a 1952/53.. GMC 450-30 (454-30) series truck.

I read the Tech report on 1 1/2 ton and 2 ton Chevy Trucks...what about GMCs huh?

I have a 3 ton GMC and have been looking for replacement wheels without much luck so far.

Closest thing I have come to is some old military 20 inch steel wheels single locking ring 7.00x20 wheels with 6 lug 8.75 bolt circle and 6.5 hole center.

I have 7.5x20 single lock ring 8 3/4 bolt circle and 6.5 hole center with 9.00x20 12 ply tires...tires are available locally at reasonable price, at $250.00, even Les Schwab had them for 300.00.

Anyway...how about some research for us poor GMC Bigger Bolts...lol

I did find some wheels on an early 60s f*** that have 6 lugs, washer seated, 8.75" bolt pattern, riding on a hub-piloted, 6.25" hole. They are 22.5" tubeless. They have stamped on them, "accuride" (fyi; these types do exist)

Hy GMCPic, the online Accuride catalog still has p/n 28157, 22.5" X 6.75" 6 stud on 8.75" with a 6.5" hole, and six hand holes, hope that helps.

And 6 lug Budd 22.5 wheels like 3B mentions are quite easy to find in junk yards in a few different widths.

Some of the old GMC's had what are called Motor Wheels. they are hub piloted. 6 lugs like you say, six hand holes and I have not found an off the shelf replacement. Place called rickson wheels is willing to make some either in 20" or 22.5" for me, but they run nearly $400 each.

A 1952/53 GMC 450-30 came equipped with hub piloted wheels made by the Motor
Wheel Corporation. They were either MW 83692 (GMC 2267606) which was a 20" x 7.00" having a Firestone RH5 locking style rim, or a MW 83638 (GMC 2263243) which was a 20" x 6.5" having a Goodyear LBW locking ring rim design. Being hub piloted the wheels have a 6.25" center hole.

The Accuride #28157 mentioned above is stud piloted with a 6.5" center hole, so you'd have to have a spacer made to allow its use. If you want to do the search, Motor Wheel Corporation began production of tubeless 22.5s in 1956 that will be exact replacements having the 6.25" center bore and using their compression washer lug nuts. There were four made, #84820 that is 6" wide, #84923 that is 6.75" wide, #84823 also 6.75" wide but with slightly more offset, and #84826 that is 7.50" wide.

I have a 1970 National Wheel and Rim Association reference showing them in use through 1969 (and likely beyond since it's a 1970 reference) under the NWRA cross reference code

X46170 for the 6.00" rim, and X46180 for the 6.75" rim. I have no record of Budd or K-H having ever made such a wheel, but it's possible they did and they fall into a gap in my references.

I have a 1979/80 Accuride catalog showing there were two made by them matching the description. Both 6.00" wide with part numbers 25702 and 26494. I don't know why two of the same width, unless it's again because of differing offset designs. This is the last reference I find for a hub piloted wheel having the 6 lug x 8.75" pattern. My references go up to 1990.

The stock 20 inch x 7 inch wasn't a widow maker "RH-5 degree" rim, it was a lock ring "R5 degree". Why Firestone gave their designs such similar names is hard to say. It gets confusing. Stu

Thank you all for the info...someday when I have an extra $1000.00 or so I will look into the 22.5s which in the long run seems the best choice.

Or buy one wheel at a time, then one tire at a time.

Too bad you are so far away, I have 4 steel 22.5" laying on the floor of my garage that I would let go cheap.....Shipping would probably be a killer though.

Now I'm confused.....

Does the truck require STUD or HUB piloted wheels; Budd or Motor Wheel respectively?
As we've seen both sorts could be had with 6 lugs on 8.75" circle, and the hub piloted wheels need a 6.25" center hole.

My '52 GMC 450 takes a hub piloted wheel, pretty sure GMCPic's will too. All six of mine are stamped "Motor Wheel 83113 - 5 3/4 - 3 48". Either way, there's some good info in this thread. Scott

Everything listed for '52/'53 with the 6 x 8.75" pattern is a Motor Wheel product, thus hub piloted. Early '40s 450s used dual cap nut (DCN) type Budd wheels, but that's it. Bigger trucks used them too.

Your MW #83113s are 20" x 6.5" having a Goodyear "L" type locking ring rim design. They have 5.75" dish with hub piloted 6.25" center bore. Stu

They are Motor Wheel Corp rims according to the info plate on glove box door. Hub pilot I'm told.

6 Lug using compression washer lug nuts.

The Accuride wheel are stud pilot #28157.

I would be happy to find a couple of original style wheels. I have no problem using tube type wheels.

Bias ply is just find by me I do not need tubeless or radials. A local tire store has plenty of 20" tires on hand for between $250.00 and $300.00. Price depends on outright purchase or mounted and balanced.

So anyone got any Motor Wheel Corp rims just lying around???

I need two. One for a spare and I have a wheel that has had a crack welded on front axle...ugh #@*&%expletives.

Preferably someone on the west coast.

The truck has Motor Wheel Corp. 6.75" x 20" w/8.75" bolt circle and 6.25" hole center, Compression washer lug nut, Goodyear style LBW locking ring ... and they are Hub Pilot. 9.00x20 Daytona Tires (recaps).

I really need two of these rims!

My left front rim has been welded, so it needs to go. And I would like to have a spare.

One of our local military surplus guys tried to sell me some ex-military wheels today.

Budd style 6 lug 6x20 stud pilot. You should have heard the sales pitch about how rare and hard to get the ex-military wheels and tires are.

Most of the rims lug holes were wobbled out and badly rusty, the tires were rotting off the rims...and without a flinch he said bravely $300.00 per tire and wheel and he would not separate rotting tires from these great old wheels.

Just a good reminder why I do not do business with them.
