Hi Guys,
Back for another question. Got the small block V8 in the engine compartment of my 49 GMC 1/2 ton and I've been reading about the short shaft water pumps. Would getting the ss water pump mean I don't have to get an electric fan for my rad? Or do I need to get both? Thanks.

The short shaft water pump really only applies to putting in a 235 or GMC engine, since they are longer than the 216. A V8 is shorter, so use whatever pump fits the accessories. You will want to run a fan clutch or spacer.

When I put the 250 in my 52, the relative height of the fan to the rad was the real problem. I suspect a V-8 would be similar; the fan sits so low it is not very effective. I've seen pics of custom shrouds with V-8s and engine driven fans, but an electric fan is a lot easier.

The sbc used 2 lenghts of water pumps. About 70
on back had the short pumps. The newer ones had
the long pump. The pulleys & brackets must match.
The best setup on an engine swap is good electric
fan. smile

The pumps with the long offset also had a degree mark on the timing cover that's in the 12:00 position. The line on the harmonic balancer and the tab on the timing cover need to match up, or there's a built-in error setting ignition timing.
