Did GM make available a locking gas gap for the '48 trucks? If so, could someone post a photo or two? How readily available are those original locking gas caps today? What is a reasonable sale price for a decent original gas cap? Is there a reproduction being made/vendor name?

Thanks for any info. on this topic.

Locking gas caps should be available through any local parts store. That's where I got mine. They may have to order in if it's not on the shelf. They're about $10-15.

In answer they were available from dealers in the 50's they appear on eBay fairly often but originals (GM) are not cheap they can run as high as $200 for good NOS. I think I have a picture of one I will look for it to post.

This page shows a couple of genuine vintage GM caps. You may have to scroll down to find the photo. (click on photo to enlarge)I was given a used one by a friend of mine and the patina of it matches my truck very well. It fits on my '45 GMC and I would think it would fit on most years of GM truck.

I don't know which gas cap is correct for a 1948. The original GM accessory locking cap with the GM script on the locking flap is hard to find and very expensive. The article in the post above shows an original one with box. On EBay a NOS GM cap in box would probably be 500 to 700 dollars. They were repopped for a short time, but the repops aren't cheap either. All these rare accessories are expensive due to the lowrider crowd collecting them.

I do not know about other years (I will check later tonight) but in 1954 the GM Accessory locking gas cap (986691) was listed as being available for passenger cars but was not listed as a truck accessory. Of course, as a Chevrolet/GM/AC part/car-accessory it could easily be ordered with a truck.

My Salesman Data Book dated 1/15/1952 on page 14 Sec 8 shows a locking cap, it looks like this one but without the wings. It also appears in the 1951 Salesman Data Book on page 210: Did not see it listed in the 1947,1948,1949,or the 1954 (I do not have a 1953 book).

This is the text describing it and they are shown with two keys that have GAS clearly visible on them.

Prevents theft of gasoline, as well as refilling without the keys. Reduces the possibility of gasoline dilution. Thwarts loss of gas tank cap, as keys cannot be removed unless the cap is securely locked. The spring snap-down cap prevents rain, sleet and dirt from entering the lock.

The locking gas cap is not shown in the 1953 Truck Data Book but it is listed in the 1953 Chevrolet Accessories price list.

Nonetheless, it works on all A-D years and models of trucks; and, it is a lot nicer than the commonly available locking gas caps (that have no cover over the key hole).

There is a NOS one on eBay now with a Buy It Now price of $150 (still too dear for me). Is there a reproduction cap like this available?

While it doen't have "script" on it her is an aftermarket locking gas cap with the flap to keep out the rain.... and simply has a Bowtie on it. On sale for $39. I think it'd look good on my panel!!...sale good till end of month.

EDIT: it says 31-48...but if it'll fit a 48 it should fit at least up to a 53 shouldn't it?

The two reproduction caps in Denny's link are not exactly like the original cap in Brad's link (no Bowtie on Brad's). Although, those two caps are nicer that the stainless steel locking cap that I bought - it has no cover over the keyhole.

What color was the GM emblem on the originals? The repops all look like they have a red or maroon color to them. I think I saw one original pic with the GM emblem in black which looks better to me.
