If you search, you find a thousand posts, and a hundred ideas on this subject. For what it's worth, before I switch to detergent oil, I pull the pan and clean out the sediment, but that's a good idea anyway. Detergent oil won't suddenly lift the sediment out.
Also, for what it's worth, in my '49 Pontiac manual, they suggest slowly switching, you know running half and half for a couple of changes, then using all detergent oil.
I'm sure others will have differing opinions!
