You'll need the correct polarity regulator to start with, but the generator can work either way with the right polarizing procedure.

Not sure what was on the instruction box...but I had to jump one wire to another for a second or so....I thought it had something to do with polarity or something like that....Not sure what I did with those instructions, but whatever I did, the whole mess is still charging...

Flash the "Armature" wire to the "Battery" terminal for a moment, which sends a jolt of current through the generator armature. Pretty good system, when everything works right. The main advantage to an alternator is an increased charge rate at idle/low speed, and it's self-regulating on current output.
