I may or may not drop a 350 into my '54 and am looking for the best manual transmission to go with it. I see the 700r4 is a very popular auto Trans but something about an automatic just doesn't scream "old truck" to me.( I know a 350 doesn't either haha) also any insight on a rear end to go with the manual transmission would be great.

A 3.90 rear with a 3-speed will have your motor screaming at highway speeds. Go with either a 5-speed (if you want a gear ratio in that range), or a 3.08, 3.23, or 3.42 and a 3 or 4 speed.

RPO MY6 Chev Truck 1982-86, aka NP 440(Chev), A833(Chrysler), fourth gear is an over drive, same length as a Chev 3spd. Chrysler used it behind everything from the slant 6 to the Hemi, and in everything thing from the Dart to 3/4 ton trucks. The Chrysler A833 won't fit, unless you find a very rare MY6 behh housing. Find one with the shifter for an MY6, or a Dodge Van. The one in 63 C20 comes up just in front of the seat to the left of the hump.

I don't own a vehicle that isn't old enough to drink.
