Could someone tell me what the recommended weight of gear lube I should use in my transmission and rear end on my 46'
half ton. Thanks.

90 weight gear oil. hyoid type for the rear end, and hypoid or non-hypoid gear oil for the transmission.

See if someone has reliable recommendation for a modern 90 weight or multi-weight gear oil in both.

Tim,
I opened the site you posted above. I have a question for you.
The Manual says the 1/2 & 3/4 ton trucks left the factory with Hypoid Axel-SAE 90 in the axles & transmissions.
The last paragraph says "all transmissions had SAE 90 Transmission or Mineral Oil Lubricant" Is this a misprint or is the Hypoid Axel-SAE 90 and SAE 90 Transmission or Mineral Oil Lubricant the same thing? headscratch

I'm restoring a 1946 & this is of interest to me.
Thanks,
Harold

The hypoid gear lubs are high pressure lubs. You must use that in rear ends. GL-5. You can also use it in the trans. You can use any of the multi viscosity as long as it covers the recomended weight. I use 85/140 in everything. These manuals are reprints from the originals. A lot has changed since then in lubricants & recomendations.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.
