I want to replace my generator with an alternator on my 1/2 ton chevy truck. I have a 235 c.i. six engine. What kind of wiring, bracket, etc do I need? What are the advantages of an alternator over a generator? After all that generator has worked for many thousands of miles! Thanks for your help.

alternators tend to put out more current at lower engine speed's and have higher current's than generators

Alternators have two main advantages....they are able to recharge the battery at idle and low rpms, and they have solid state built in regulators which also makes things much more reliable and trouble free. Basically you just need a mounting bracket, an alternator, and a DA Plug and you are in business. Send me your address and I will drop you a catalog in the mail. Go with the alternator with the internal regulator, you won't be sorry. You should be able to get one that will bolt right in, from the 70s Chevys. Randy can probably help you on the year. Iirc, 62 was the last year for the generator on the Chevy. My 63 Bel Air had an alternator (external regulator).
