After taking the cover off, I could see that the cutoff and the voltage relays were opening and closing several times per second with the engine at fast idle. Is this normal? The battery shows 8 volts.
Now I'm worried that the Previous Owner put the battery in backwards on purpose (positive ground) and bought a regulator for a positive ground system. I switched the battery back to neg ground yesterday and polarized the generator. How can I tell whether the regulator is a positve or negative ground type?
My dad always told me, "Don't force it, get a bigger hammer".

What is your gauge on the truck showing when the regulator is doing the clicking?

They respond quickly and with the long time constants in the field circuit, they provide for regulated current and voltage. The cutout relay on the other hand should not be doing this. If the system is functioning correctly, the cutout relay should close when the rpms are above idle, and stay that way until they drop down. I would be trying a new regulator first. If the PO drove it polarized backwards, that could damage the regulator. | | |
#86270 06/08/2003 1:04 PM | Joined: Jul 2000 Posts: 504 Member | | Member Joined: Jul 2000 Posts: 504 | I have an old Delco Remy parts book. According to that, a 52 Chevy truck ( neg ground ) uses a Delco D 601 regulator. A GMC of the same year ( positive ground ) uses a D 603..
I am not sure if there is a Delco part number on your regulator. If there is a number other than these two, post it here and I will try to cross it in the Delco Book..

Regulators and generators should be "Flashed" or "Polarized" together, this will prevent the problem shown here.
I have a bunch of vehicles with generators and always do this after doing any electrical work or even after they have been sitting a long time. It only takes two seconds.
