What got me to wondering about whether the 12v system was factory original is the fact that the wiring is all the small gauge wire with plastic insulation. I don't think this pickup has ever had the wiring changed and several other 54s i have worked on in the past have had the bigger gauge wiring that is consistant with 6volt systems. Anyone got the scoop on this or am i just missing something thats common knowledge for everyone else. Just wondering. thanks in advance for any replies.

I basicly was wondering what was the earliest point in time that 12volt systems were avaliable on chevrolets. The earliest system (12 volts) that I am aware of were on dodge bros. cars in the 20's

The wiring in 1954 models had been changed over to the plastic covered wires rather than the old fabric wrapped.
Cadillac, Buick and Oldsmobile changed over to 12 volt systems on their overhead valve V8 models in 1953.
Ford lagged behind and didn't change their cars until 1956
