my 1954 1/2 ton had 12v set up when i got it. What got me to wondering about whether the 12v system was factory original is the fact that the wiring is all the small gauge wire with plastic insulation. I don't think this pickup has ever had the wiring changed and several other 54s i have worked on in the past have had the bigger gauge wiring that is consistant with 6volt systems. Anyone got the scoop on this or am i just missing something thats common knowledge for everyone else. Just wondering. thanks in advance for any replies.

i believe all chvy pickups were 6v until the later 50 models? matter of fact i am not sure they even made 12v batteries in this era. i have a a 54 and it was 6v untill i changed it over. it sounds like the previous owner has already changed yours to 12v.

hey thanks for the input. you could be right. I basicly was wondering what was the earliest point in time that 12volt systems were avaliable on chevrolets. The earliest system (12 volts) that I am aware of were on dodge bros. cars in the 20's

All 1955 Chevrolet passenger cars and 2nd series 1955 Chevrolet trucks were the first modern Chevrolets to have a 12Volt system. The wiring in 1954 models had been changed over to the plastic covered wires rather than the old fabric wrapped.

Cadillac, Buick and Oldsmobile changed over to 12 volt systems on their overhead valve V8 models in 1953.

Ford lagged behind and didn't change their cars until 1956

And GMC didn't switch the 6 cylinder models over until '56 for some unknown reason...
