I have a '63 half ton pick up, 3 speed on column with an inline 6 engine. Am in the process of taking apart repairing etc. the engine will run but stops periodically, like being gas starved.....I clean fuel line and it runs fine for a while....am going to take tank out and clean....my question is should the gas run out of the tank if the line is removed......mine does not......also
compressed air blown into tank does not help.....any help is appreciated.....Pat

I went through the same thing with mine. If the truck has sat for any length of time the tank is most likely rusted from condensation. The best fix is to replace the tank or you will fight the issue from now on. I purchased and installed a new tank, new fuel lines and reworked the original carb.

My tank cost 175 dollars....it was well worth it.

A tank restoration kit from Eastwood or POR15 is an option if you have the time and don't mind working with chemicals like muriatic acid. I did a tank on my FORD and everything cost me about $70. Fairly easy to do but you have to be careful with the acid.

thanks for the replys....I pulled the sending unit from the top of the tank and the line attached had a metal filter that was all corroded and plugged.....after cleaning and replacing the engine runs fine.....am in process of cleaning the engine compartment next.....this really keeps my interest going......Pat

If the stuff plugging the metal filter was rust, then there is probably more rust in the tank, and I think it won't be long until you are facing the same problem again.
