My son works at a auto junk yard and needs to know what one to get for me.

It has an internal voltage regulator and was standard equipment om practically all GM vehicles from the late 1970's to the early 1990's. The smaller-housing alternators from the 90's forward aren't quite as reliable, IMHO. The 10-SI has amperage capacities from 65 amps to 90+, depending on the year and application.
Unless you're running some mega-blaster sound system or a set of hydraulic pumps for a bouncy lowrider, any of them should provide plenty of current to keep the accessories running and the battery charged.
