I hope this is posted in the correct place.

It's about the door glass. The existing glass I have has a metal band all around it. I have seen other examples of glass without it. My question is if I use the existing glass as a template, will I have to compensate for size if I do not want to re-install the metal band, or can I just leave it off?

Any information will be appreciated.

What exactly are you working on???

I assume your truck is a pre-51 with the one piece door glasses?
If so and by metal band you mean like this?
The frameless examples you've seen without are more likely to be aftermarket kits with tempered glass.

The original lower sashes are designed to work with the metal frame and are joined with small double ended bolts,the felts are also much wider to compensate for the extra thickness.

My theory why the factory used a frame is that if it were a large 'unsupported' laminated glass without the frame is that if you were to slam the door with the window in an open position it would/could possibly crack the glass.

Are yours rusted out,or is it more to do with looks?

Sorry, Casey. Forgot to note what truck, but it's a '49 Model 3100. Jock hit the nail on the head.

My existing glass has that metal band around the perimeter of the glass. I've seen some restored examples with the band and some without. What I wanted to know was if I had to specify to my glass cutter whether or not I was going to use the banding or not, in case it would be necessary to compensate for size.

Originally, I was going to work with a local flat glass provider, but have since found out that I can actually purchase it for much less online. But, still my question remains.

jock is correct. If you plan to use glass without a frame, the channels will have to be changed. Maybe other parts. And, of course, if you are having flat glass cut, and it's not original, make a template out of 1/4" plywood that fits your doors correctly, (after you have installed the correct width channel,) so the shop knows what you expect. I have not had mine apart yet, so can't give details. (I will be replacing both door glasses at some point.) I guess if you want original, keep the frames...may be more work/cost, but old is cool! But, if it's a rod, go the easy way, power windows, etc. It's you're ride!!

I have seen them painted black, but I think I'll go with a light silver color.

I'm ordering a light green tint on the glass (except for the windshield).
