i have a 54 with a hydramatic. the column in the engine compartment is worn from age. the truck slips into gear very easily from Neutral. is there any fix to this at all? it is tight through every other point, even going into reverse. just curious if there is a fix for it.

I was having the almost the same problem, mine was slipping from 1-4 down into 1-3 position... I fixed it by adjusting the linkage and putting washers where they connect to tighten up the slop... It also took care most of the rattles in the linkage...

On the bracket that clamps around the steering column that the neutral start switch mounts to under the hood, there are detents for each shift position. What happens is the rod right behind the shift lever is supposed to slide back and forth and lock into the detent positions. It dries up and binds so that the rod does not slide in and out smoothly as it should and you don't get the solid lock into each gear position.
