I need some help figuring this out. I have a 64 model chevy for starters. There is an orange wire going to the brake light switch, that is the hot wire,ok, there is a white wire comming from the same switch which goes to the sterring colum and up to the turn signal switch somewhere? What does this white wire hook to, another wire? if so what color? I've got all the other lights working the way they should. Please help me on this one as I'm bout to cuss. Thanks , philip

the brake wire goes through the part of the turn signal switch for the back turn signals so the rear signals can flash while the brakes are on.it uses the same wires from the turn signal switch to the rear lights for the brakes and turn signals,at least on my ****.

Relax a look at the wiring schematic for the column signal wiring. The Full time B+ current goes into the brake switch on the orange wire and when the pedal is pressed, it makes the switch pass the current to the white wire that goes into the column signal switch. The switch then distributes the current to the Left and right wires that go to the back stop/signal lights. The left and right wires are Yellow and Dark Green.

So with the brake pedal pressed down check these wires for current at the column or the connector at the firewall for juice.

I just fixed one today where the connector terminals were corroded and the current couldn't pass from the column wire to the harness connector.

Do you get any power out of the switch when you push on the brake pedel? If not then it's the brake switch. If then the trouble would be in the sterring colum or turn signal switch.

Thanks guys, Jolly, about the switch ,yes it's good. Joe, here's the deal, The po changed the sterring wheel and colum to a newer model and he had a wiring nitemare. I have put it back original the best I can following the wiring diagram . I bought new front and rear harness that runs to the back lights,got them from Chevy Duty. Ive put the new wiring in already.The white wire that goes to the colum up to the turn sig switch has been cut away from switch and I did'nt know where to hook it back up. Can I just splice it back into the Yellow and Dark Green wire somewhere? :rolleyes:

You'll want to connect the white brake switch wire to the columns white wire or Black with white stripe wire.

P.S. When you make the connection check for current from the switch going up into the column and then again going out the connector to the stop/taillight wires.

Like I said earlier, sometimes the connector doesn't make good contact between the pins and you won't pass current from the column to the wiring harness going to the back.
