Anyone do this combo before?

Im still having problems with the search function on here. With each individual reply showing as a result it's too quick to fill up the 1000 results and hard to comb through them...

This would be for my 54 3800 1-ton.
I want to think of a good way to reduce highway rpm but not give up my LOW gearing...
My thought was with the torque( and higher rpm) of the 292. I could get away with the 0.78 OD of a ranger torque splitter from advance adapters and still end up with the same force in "5th" gear as the original 235 had in 4th but with lower rpm. I think it still ends up having more pull even in overdrive actually...

The ranger costs $1200-1300 I think but would also act as an "adapter" between the 292 and sm420 so I'd save some cost there I think...

I'd also like to consider adding a TBI set-up to the 292.

I was hoping to see what a ranger overdrive unit install looks like. I know one or two people here have used them but I can't find any pics.. I know you have to move the original shifter back in the cab 7.5" becuase the OD goes between the engine and transmission. I'm wondering how close this puts it to the bench seat...

Why would you need an adapter between your 292 and the sm420? should be a direct fit. I think that you will be happy with a ranger O/D they are pretty robust are easy to shift, and have a high over ratio like a nv4500. You can use it to split the gears if you like to play around or just leave it in O/D and shift your main trans like normal. It will definately help you on the road if you are still running the the original eaton!
