Any secrets to getting the other part out of the block? The casting numbers says it's a '79 350 block.

You could also take a nice heavy piece of wire and make a U bend on one end, have the bend tight enough so it can be pushed into the tube. Then push it into the tube and work it around so it hooks on to the end of the tube, take a vice grip and pull it up. I removed the starter to get a little more room to work and discovered the dip stick was mounted in a seperate block of steel bolted to the side of the block. Removed the 2 allen screws and the block came right off. The tube was real easy to remove on the bench. I'm replacing it with a Lokar brand dip tube assembly which required the hole to be reamed out. So having that removalable block sure made it easy.

Does your oil pan have a bump out on the right side also? You may have a newer engine than you thought. You'll probably find the original dipstick tube hole on the other side of the block if it would be more convenient to have it there. Jerry

The casting number (3970010) shows it could be from '68 to '79. I was told it was an '86 by PO but ?? The oil pan is notched for a passenger side dip stick so I'll keep it there. The old dip stick wasn't long enough which also points to it being a '79 or earlier.
I found that out the hard way by overfilling the engine - what a mess.
