Hi guys, i have a 63 chevy stepside and i wanted to know what kind of tips or ideas can yall give me about getting rust off of my baby. There is some in all the places you can think of on the cab. Acid dip? Sandblast? I need to get it off. I dont know what i should do because i dont have the money to get a good quality cab from lmc or any high auto shops. I find some cabs on craigslist but they turn out rusted too. Really need some help and you guys are my last chance for this cab and my pockets to live. Thx chance.

Surface rust can be treated with sandpaper. A good air compressor is needed if you want to use a dual action sander. I use an electric 7 inch disc sander from Harbor Freight because it quickly cuts down to the bare metal and saves time. Another method is to use the 4 and 1/2 inch polycarbide disc on an angle grinder. It is designed to strip paint and works great on rust too.

Epoxy primer will help keep rust from returning and spreading once you get rid of the rust as suggested above.

I am sure that most on here will say that sandblasting is the only way to go. It seems the best but is dangerous to your lungs unless you have the right equipment. I don't have a compressor large enough to do sandblasting.

Metal that is rotted with rust needs to be cut out and patch panels used for repair.

I think you need to post some pictures so peole here have a better idea of what kind of rust problem you are dealing with. Then you will get more responses.

I used a preasurized sand blater with 40-60 Black Diamond blasting media on parts that were badly rusted then treated with Jensco metal prep rust neutralizer. Then block sanded the part after the rust neutralizer dried. On parts that were rusted but not as bad. I used a 4 1/2" electric grinder with a flap disc or wire btush. And treated the part again with Jensco and block sanded. the sand blasting will tell you the truth about how bad the rusted part really is. here is a pic of part of the cab floor on my 55 2nd series truck after a sand blasting And here is a pic of the whole cab before i sand blasted it Here is the cab after I and blasted and treated with Jensco and then primed here is a pic of the truck before blasting and sanding here is one of it before the paint and bed was put on. some folks will tell you that the preasurized sand blaster that you can buy from Tractor Supply is to small to do the job. Well as you can see by the pictures it does the job well. And for $140 it is well worth getting. The Black Diamond blasting media runs $7.99 a bag. But if you put a thick tarp under what you are blasting you can use the sand twice. To do all the sand blasting on the 55 2nd series project. I used 10 bags total. The flap disc you can pick up on Ebay by the 10 pack for around $12.00.
