I got a door that looks like old paint and it had rusted where the paint had faded over years. I took a da and sanded off all the old paint and knocked the rust down to where it looks black. Now my question is what should I do about the black area? I am going to shoot it with some NAPA etch loc first before priming.

Sand blast the "black" area or grind it to shiny metal, or the rust will return. Next epoxy prime it with PPG or Dupont. Then do whatever plastic work (bondo) on top of the epoxy primer. Next, prime with high build primer. Then block sand it all. Get rid of the high and low spots. Then primer/sealer, then base coat. Then Clear coat. Stay with one manufacturer to ensure compatibility.
