Also, once I find out the VIN number, is there a way to recreate a new ID plate with that VIN number on it?

| | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | "vins" [serial number really] weren't stamped on the frames until after the mid-50's hef, so you won't find it, but if it has the original engine, the number stamped on it may match the title as engine numbers were used for titling back then .... otherwise you need to discuss it with your DMV folks

Go to the GM Heritage web site. You can find a lot of information there about your vehicle. I too have a 1946 Suburban that was missing the VIN plate. I called these folks up and asked some questions about locations. They did tell me that some frames did come from the factory with numbers stamped on them, but not all of them. He also told me that there was not a particular location. It depended on the worker that day. The center told me to look on the driver side of the frame near the first cross member. I didn't find a number, but I did find letters. I called the center back and asked about the letters and they told me that they referred to the factory where the frame was made. "SL" is what I found which I was told that this meant the frame was made in St. Louis. I thought that was pretty cool just to find that out. The numbers on the engine are the same way. Some states used those as number as VINs, but not all states did. Some didn't even use numbers at all. Crazy huh! Well good luck. I ended up getting a new VIN tag and title through the State of Ohio. Sad part is, now the Suburban is considered a 2011 self assembled vehicle and not a 1946. Well, at least I will be able to drive it.
