Just completed rewiring 37 1/2 Ton..
Before conecting the wire to the sending unit when I turned on the ignition switch the guage went straight to full.... I understand this is correct.....
I then thought that if I grounded out the wire which goes to the sender the guage would then go to empty? I ground out the wire on the negitive battery cable .... now the guage does not work

The gage has to go to ground through the float resistor at the tank. My truck had a fried gage. I think I have fixed it but don't know yet. Still in the restoration phase. If you take the gage out there is a very fine wire wound in a coil. Mine was burnt off. I simply took one wrap off the coil and resoldered it to the terminal.
