What gives? Are these the type of brakes that you adjust while driving backwards and pumping the pedal? Thank you in advance for any input.

Take a look at this kit: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/pa...8kolj?itemIdentifier=210302_0_11000_4231 The two silver pieces go together and the gear on the larger piece is turned by the gold colored lever when it is permitted to move enough as brakes are applied. If you clean things up you will see the outline of the hole scored into the metal. They are self adjusting & are suposed to click them up when you stop in reverse, but often The adjusters are not working or the adjustment screw in rusted tight.

Your rear end is designed to be self-adjusting. Take a look here: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/auto-parts/brakes/brake-types/drum-brake2.htm to see the basic functioning of the self adjustment mechanism. IMO, I'd opt for the cure and not the band aide. Done once and you're GTG. Added: Some self adjusters rotate when the emergency brake is set. If you haven't been setting the ebrake, it's possible that could be the issue.
