I wanted to leave the old voltage regulator on the firewall for aesthetic reasons so I simply connected the heavy gauge wire from the alternator to the 'Bat' post on the old regulator instead of the 'Gen' post. That makes a direct feed to the battery through the ammeter allowing the correct operation of the ammeter.
